- Ibiza Cricket Club 1989
The words ‘Ibiza’ and ‘Cricket’ do not always spring to mind however the club was founded in 1986 by the late Desmond King with Len Hamilton-Smith becoming its first captain. Len’s captaincy from 86-91 proved to be very successful, winning numerous trophies including the inaugural Balearic Championship played on home soil in 1990.
The late Colin Priorwas passed the baton in the early 90’s handing over to Steve Clarke, Tony Copping and Bill Hodges to steer the club through the challenging mid to late 90’s.
With the turn of the new millennium Julian Cobby became skipper and with his vast contacts injected some youth and enthusiasm into the club.
Martin Makepeace took over the captaincy in 2006 winning the Balearic Cup in 2007 and now Jeremy Parmenter has taken the reins with a mixture of locally based younger talent and some more experienced heads. In 2011 Ibiza Cricket Club went on an unprecedented run of 12 wins in a row including a double over Sporting Alfas – Spain’s strongest team – so the signs are good and the club is looking forward to a bright future.
