Cheam Wanderers Ibiza Tour

IBIZA C.C. vs CHEAM WANDERERS C.C.

15/09/09 Twenty20 Match

Before the game started, the teams paid their respects with one minute's silence for the Ibiza C.C.'s captain, Martin Makepeace's father, who has just passed away.

Regarding the game, the conditions were so wet and damp that the normal cricket mat could not be used, so a 20/20 practice match was set up on the football pitch and played with spitting rain throughout. However an entertaining game was achieved with CHEAM batting first and scoring 180 runs off their 20 overs. Their top scorer was Johann "UK Saffer" Kriek with 69 runs, although he was dropped twice during his innings. IBIZA bowlers Bob "the Vicar" Short, George "Kiwi" Burdon, and yours truly contributed with two wickets each. IBIZA began their run chase very well, being 90 for none off 10 overs, but could not maintain this rate, and ended up with 159 for 5 wickets, their run scorers being mainly Bob "the Vicar" Short with 63, and Adam "Big man" Johnstone with 39.

17/09/09 30 Over Match

This time the conditions were dry and sunny, so it was possible to play on the cricket mat. IBIZA were asked to bat first, and although unfortunately missing their usual openers, managed a respectable 187 for 5, thanks to contributions from a newcomer, Greg "Tattoos" Wainwright (73 not out), Sam "D.J." Feasey (50), and Jordan "Ibiza Saffer" van Byleveldt (25). CHEAM paced their run chase well with batsmen down to number 8, and although losing regular wickets, reached their target in the 27th over, obtaining 191 for 7, with Johann Kriek (32), N.Perkins (31), and G.Butcher (32) all batting well and keeping them in line with the required run rate. IBIZA's fielding was good, but some of the bowling showed our lack of match practice, of which CHEAM took full advantage. Out of the IBIZA bowlers who contributed, Jordan van Byleveldt with 3 for 22 and Sam Feasey with 2 for 37 were the most successful. It was felt that IBIZA would have been able to defend a score with 15/20 more runs, but CHEAM visited two years ago and won both matches in tight finishes again, thus proving that they are one of the stronger touring sides to visit Ibiza. In any event, the matches were played in the friendly spirit that epitomises Ibiza cricket (and the island) and were enjoyed by all. Many thanks to Lyn Carpenter, who organised the BBQ after the second game, and to scorer "Tennis" Mike.
