Holmbury St Mary, a village league cricket side established in 1892, batted first and lost a wicket first ball! But then Dan Russell (25) and Brad Cooper (50 retired) consolidated steadily at 5 runs per over. Matt Evans (15) and Paul Seligman (31) continued after the previous two batters had departed, but with wickets falling regularly and the run rate still under a run per ball, at 152/9 off 29 overs, Ibiza felt they could restrict the visitors to a below par score. However, the in form Brad Cooper returned and hit 23 off the final over, which went for 31 runs and Ibiza’s target expanded to a more imposing 184! Ibiza opening bowlers Harvey and Cruttwell obtained a wicket each, as did Parmenter and Dudding, while Kiwi Ben Morris and the consistent Amos contributed 3 wickets and 2 respectively.
Ibiza began their chase and opener Holmes (21) looked set when he was caught in the deep. As so often happens, several wickets fell and the hosts looked in trouble at 55/3 after 15 overs, still needing 129 runs. However, Parmenter (49) and skipper Gooda (43) combined well to reduce the deficit, and, in spite of both departing before, Dudding hit a couple of boundaries to bring the runs required to 9 off the last over. Then he fell and last batsman Amos needed 2 boundaries to win, but was clean bowled and the visitors had won another tense finish! HSM bowler Geoff Finch stood out with an impressive 5/11 and accounted for the last 2 wickets too.
