Ibiza went in first and scored positively with opener Paddy Mills (51 retired) batting well, supported by Gooda (34), leaving the hosts on 88/2 off 15 overs. Although they then lost a few wickets, the experienced Makepeace (28 not out) combined with Cruttwell (29) to keep the score ticking along, allowing Ibiza to finish on a decent 178/5 off 30 overs. HSM bowlers Seligman, Cooper, Russell and Finch all contributed 1 wicket apiece.
Holmbury then batted and openers Dan Russell (50 retired) and Nick Menzies (52 retired) were rock solid in their 128 run stand. Once they retired, a clutter of wickets fell, and they still required 30 runs off 2 overs, setting up another tense finish. However, opener Russell returned and, with Cooper, scored the 21 runs needed off the last over, consigning Ibiza to a consecutive final over defeat.
The Ibiza bowlers gave a great effort throughout, with Amos (4 wickets) standing out, along with veteran J. Parmenter (4 wickets), while it was the latter who was unfortunately not able to stop the flow of runs in the final over.
Our thanks go to Dan Russell and Paul Seligman for organising Holmbury St Mary’s first tour for many years and for choosing Ibiza (or Ibzia as they call it!) along with a friendly and talented group of Surrey Downs league cricketers, including 5 Saffers! RPHood
