LNZCC batted first and were determined to improve on their performance the day before. Skipper Sam Martin (31) and Vance Thompson (34) got them rolling, and with Henry Blackwell adding a classy 42, they reached a solid 94/1 off 15 overs. Even after their departure, the visitors’ lusty batting continued with Ryan Allan (25), Raina (41) and Josh Wright (19 not out) all pitching in to allow them to finish on an imposing 220/9.
The Ibiza bowlers and fielders tried hard to contain them, with Slater(2), Parmenter(2), Morris (2), Hadlow (1) and Cruttwell (1) all contributing wickets, but the fielding and bowling was not as alert overall as the previous day.
So Ibiza needed to score at more than 7 runs per over, and Paddy Mills attacked the bowling with an aggressive 68, supported by Shahid (13). But once the former was well caught on the boundary, wickets started to fall, Ibiza reaching 94/4 off 15 overs. The locals continued to lose wickets with only skipper Sam Gooda showing typical defiance in his robust 54, once again supported by last man Mike Amos with 15 not out. But it was not to be and when Gooda was caught going for another big hit, LNZCC ran out deserved winners of another sporting contest.
The visitors’ bowlers Sam Martin (2), Vaughn Robertson (3) and Raina (2) stood out, but all their fielding and bowling was of a high standard, and made Ibiza’s task all the harder. This is the seventh consecutive annual fixture of friendly and competitive cricket against LNZCC, and we thank Gerard Walsh, Sam Martin and Josh Wright for returning year after year. Roll on 2020!
