Staplefield Village Idiots v Ibiza CC -

20/20 match

Ibiza skipper Gooda welcomed a few of his previous league cricket teammates, posing as the Staplefield Village Idiots, to Sant Agusti for a festival of cricket, comprising 2 shorter games in one day! Ibiza batted first in a 20/20 game to start off, and with the visitors´ skipper Will Fyffe giving everyone a bowl, the hosts were able to rack up a competitive 147/8. A. Johnston(39 not out), Prentice (27) and Slater (25) all made useful contributions.

The visitors´ bowlers English (2), Ponsford (2), Drew Fyffe (1),the skipper’s brother, Wiseman (1), Bentley(1), and Dobbs (1) took the wickets to fall.

Staplefield then showed their batting depth with a well timed run chase to finish on 151/5 in the last over, Wiseman (45 retired) and Drake (41 retired) were the main run scorers but several contributed cameos, and it was fitting that skipper Will Fyffe scored the winning runs in a sporting and sociable contest.

Ibiza bowlers Dudding (2), R.Parmenter (2) and Prentice (1) were the wicket takers.

10 x 8 ball overs match

In the second, shorter game of 80 balls, the visitors batted first, striking the ball around the ground to end on an impressive 117/8, or over 10 runs per over. Dobbs (28), Ponsford (24), Wiseman (18), Drake (24 not out) and Will Fyffe (15) all scored aggressively to set up this total. Ibiza bowlers Slater (3), Dudding (2), R.Parmenter (2) and J.Parmenter (1) all contributed wickets.

In their reply, Ibiza lost star batsman A. Johnston early, and it seemed they would struggle, but skipper Gooda (38 retired), and Slater (41 retired), having a good day with bat and ball, scored runs freely against the visitors´ “mixed bag” bowling attack and the target came down rapidly. Ken Johnston (15 not out) hit the winning runs in the 9th over, Ibiza finishing on 122/2.

2 games of cricket was a challenge, especially Ibiza, after their lack lustre efforts in Menorca the weekend before, but skipper Sam Gooda  nevertheless managed to field a Friday team against his very congenial friends from Staplefield, Surrey. Thanks go to Will and Drew Fyffe and Matt Dobbs for bringing their teammates to Ibiza for the first time, and we hope to see them return soon!
