New Victoria was asked to bat first and the visitors started off watchfully against the hosts’ opening bowlers, with Ibiza determined to be more disciplined all round, after 2 consecutive losses. Batsman Barry Mills (23) played some good shots before falling to a shooter, and then several wickets fell, leaving New Victoria on 62/4 off 15 overs. Paul Sawbridge (14) upped the run rate with a few boundaries, followed by Owen Jamieson (27), but Ibiza kept chipping away with wickets, and at 103/7, it seemed that the end was near. However, David Jamieson (15) and Joe Sawbridge (23) had other ideas and added crucial runs to get the visitors up to a defendable 146 all out in the 29th over.
Ibiza bowlers Hadlow (3), R.Parmenter (3), Dudding (2) had the most success, with Prentice and Amos also getting a wicket each.
The locals then batted and very soon found themselves on a flaky 15/3 in 4 overs, a situation this writer has witnessed often in the past! However, opener Shahid Hanan put his head down, as in the previous week, and set out to stabilise the innings, well supported by island newcomer Rory Thomson, batting at 5. They not only saw off the opening bowlers, but then proceeded to increase the run rate as the visitors’ bowling faltered, reaching 84/3 off 15 overs, then 119 off 20, leaving 31 runs to win off 10 overs. They ended up with an unbeaten 135 run partnership, Shahid scoring 73 not out and Thomson 64 not out, allowing Ibiza to win convincingly by 7 wickets.
Of the visitors, all rounder Barry Mills impressed with 2/14 and skipper Kieron Rigby contributed the other wicket.
Many thanks to tour organiser Owen Jamieson for bringing his team of genial Merseysiders to Ibiza and we look forward to welcoming them back soon! Ibiza now has a week off before their last 2 home matches, while the Southport lads have a double header against the Surrey seniors to come.
