Ibiza CC vs Turville Park CC (Henley -est. 1880) 16/04/16 30 overs per side.
Ibiza batted first and scored runs steadily, reaching 73/1 at the halfway point, and then accelerating well afterwards. Opener Sam Gooda continued his fine batting form with an aggressive 78 and was supported by newcomer Tim Stacey (14), Paul Partridge with a robust 31, as well as Pete Essex with 42 not out and cameos from skipper Graham Boe (20), and Robin Parmenter (18). This allowed Ibiza to finish their innings on a healthy 220/6 at more than 7 runs per over. The visitors' bowling was wayward at times, but their fielding and catching were exemplary, and the bowlers obtaining wickets were Neil Runkel (2/54), with Ollie Thornton, Paul Girdler and James Thornton getting one each.
Turville Park then batted and were more cautious than Ibiza at first, reaching 59/5 after 15 overs, with another 161 runs needed, or over 10 runs per over. However, once star batsman James Hunt (97 ) and Skipper Sam Beardell (57 not out) combined in a rapid 130 run partnership, it turned the game around and only 51 runs were required off the last 4 overs, which was very gettable on a small ground such as San Agustin. Then Paul Partridge pulled off a spectacular and unlikely catch in the deep to send back James Hunt and helped with a run out too, and the last 4 wickets fell for the addition of 25 runs, Ibiza running out winners of an entertaining game of cricket by 24 runs. Of the Ibiza bowlers, Mike Amos (3/8) and Pete Essex (2/15) stood out, while Graham Boe, Robin Parmenter and Shubham obtained a wicket each. The Ibiza fielding was more alert than the weekend before too, and maintained the pressure on the visitors throughout.
17/04/16 30 overs per side.
Turville Park batted first today and began positively with Colin Simon hitting a fluent 37, before several wickets fell, and, despite contributions from Tim Wade (16), and Ollie Thornton (20) were soon on 67/6. David Stockings then hit a brisk 27 to improve their total, but, at 122/9, Ibiza had hopes of restricting them to 130.Skipper Sam Beardall had other ideas however, and hit a rapid 40 not out, before their innings finished on 163 all out. Ibiza bowlers Jeremy Parmenter (3/16), Pete Essex (2/15) and Mike Amos (2/44) had the most success, while Paul Partridge contributed a wicket. The Ibiza fielding was enthusiastic, and Shubham's 2 runouts were an example to all.
Ibiza felt that a target of around 5 runs per over was achievable, but with the batting order changed around to give everyone a go, their innings did not get the necessary impetus and they stuttered along to 45/4, then 57/8 and eventually succombed to 63 all out in the 18th over, losing comprehensively by 100 runs! Only Shubham provided some resistance with 23 runs, but Ibiza were totally outplayed by accurate bowling and competent catching from the visitors. Their bowlers Nick Henry (3/21), Neil Runkel (4/13), and Paul Girdler (3/9) did the damage and caused the Ibiza collapse, from which hopefully they will take lessons for the coming fixtures.
Turville Park C.C. exists since 1880 and play genuine village cricket, judging from the friendly and sporting group of first time visitors to Ibiza. Thanks to skipper Sam Beardall and organiser Paul Briffett for bringing them here and making it a great weekend of cricket all round. We hope to see them back again soon!
As for Ibiza, there are matches every weekend until 7 May, leading up to the Balearic Cup, so please contact skipper Graham Boe on 653374558 for information, if you would like to participate.
