LNZCC batted first and at once faced accurate pace bowling from Jim Harvey (2/24) and Paul Cruttwell (1/24) which kept the scoring rate low. However, Richard Lambe (15) and Sunny Nathu (24) then increased the run rate, supported by Rana Pritesh (31), with a flurry of boundaries. Once they departed though, the visitors’ innings stuttered along, with only Leith Cowie (13) and skipper Gerard Walsh (14) reaching double figures to leave LNZCC on 123 all out from 26 overs. The other Ibiza bowlers to stand out were Mike Amos (2/14) and Paddy Mills (3/6), helped by Kiwi Ben Morris and Ken Johnston with a wicket apiece.
When Ibiza batted, skipper Sam Gooda (24) and fellow opener Paddy Mills (14) knew they needed to see off the London Kiwi testing opening bowlers Sam Martin and Vance Thompson (2/12), and although this job was done, they both departed to excellent reflex catches, reflecting the high level of fielding from the visitors. At 65/4 off 17 overs, the Ibiza middle order needed to defend as well as keep the score moving along, and home Kiwi Chris Prentice (26) and Ken Johnston duly obliged. Indeed, the latter scored steadily before launching an impressive blitz of consecutive boundaries that allowed him to reach 49 not out and hit the winning runs, Ibiza getting to their target in 26 overs in an entertaining game of cricket.
Thanks go, as ever, to LNZCC chairman Gerard Walsh for bringing his group of friendly and sporting Kiwis for their 6th consecutive year, and long may we welcome them back to Ibiza!
